Millions of people are addicted to one thing or another but probably the two substances which top the list are caffeine and nicotine, not necessarily in that order. It is the ease of getting addicted that makes these two substances controversial for it can cross the blood/brain barrier and it can also cross the placental barrier making both not only dangerous to the adult body but also for the baby still in the body of its mother.
There are so many organizations which call for the ban of these two substances, most especially nicotine which is seen as the greater evil over caffeine. There are also a lot of medical strategies which can make quitting the smoking and drinking of coffee easier – or so the claims state. However, everybody knows that despite all the strategies and tools, it is just too hard to quit either substance. But there are some people who can quit successfully and do not even bother to go through any form of medical tools or therapy. They just simply quit.
Which leaves us with the question: why can some people quit faster than the rest of the addicts out there? What do they do which separates them from lesser mortals like us? Are they doing or taking anything which makes their quitting so easy that they can do it in an instant?
The truth is, there are just some people who can be so determined about quitting a habit that once they make a decision to quit, they just can. They do not gradually quit, they do not slow down their intake, they just plain quit – cold turkey – and they succeed.
Take for example one friend whom everyone knew smoked at least one pack a day of unfiltered cigarettes. The number of smokes she had increased if she drank alcohol or was under a lot of stress and she would soon drink no less than 8 cups of strong brewed coffee a day and smoke more than a pack. Then one day she said she was in her late 20s and she did not want to smoke or drink coffee anymore because she read somewhere that her smoking could ruin her looks. In front of everyone she took one last puff of smoke, threw it, dumped her coffee and coffee mug and that was it. That was more than 15 years ago and she looks great, is healthy and has not been tempted.
When asked about the withdrawal symptoms she just said she went through them but so what, she had more things to think about and she really could not care less. And that was it. This is pure determination and a solid decision to quit. Now if they could bottle that determination up or even process it into a capsule, it would make her a trillionaire several times over.
And yes, she was right, she quit and she retained her looks and health. That, she said, was just a bonus for her neither for nor, despite no caffeine or nicotine in her system she is busier than ever and has more energy.
